Lithium Ion Batteries for marine applications
Let’s dicover some good reasons to choose a lithium Ion battery for your boat, sailing, yachting and a lot of other marine applications.
The batteries lithium are more intended for a use on a sailing ship or a catamaran. On these types of boats, the batteries cannot be reloaded while sailing as on a motorized boat.
It is preferable to privilege Iron Phosphate (LIFeP04) lithium batteries when the performances of the boat are closely related to the weight. The batteries lithium are lighter than the classical AGM batteries.
Moreover, if there are also many electronic devices on board such as an air conditioning, a microwave or a washing machine, it is better to choose batteries lithium.
Why to move on lithium-Ion batteries?
On equal performance, a lithium battery is more expensive BUT it is especially more efficient, lighter and allows a considerable profit of space on board. We can easily gain 1/3 of volume compared to a conventional battery.
Be aware that a lithium Ion battery has a lifetime 3 or 4 times higher than an AGM one.
According to the lifetime, a lithium battery is barely more expensive than a classic battery.
Moreover, they almost do not need maintenance, have no memory effects, no possible leaks and recharge in one hour. They are insensitive with the vibrations.
The battery is the heart of the boat
Indeed, boats are more and more equipped with electronic devices which it is necessary to feed.
If you replace a lead-acid battery by a lithium battery, you can:
- choose a 20% smaller capacity to have the same autonomy
- or take the same capacity to have more autonomy
If you have a new installation, you can choose your battery according to the energy you need for one day. Then, you deduce the needed capacity : E (energy “Wh”) = C (capacity “Ah”) x V (12V or 24V battery voltage) C = E /V.
